You know, I've fished come panfish, but have yet to take anything bigger. I read books, but learning for me is often about doing. If you had a coupleof tips, flies, etc... for the steelhead season, what would they be?
when fishing rivers i find it much eaiser to notice a fish on with indicators. you can buy indicators or you can make your own. they are very easy to use and help a ton. another thing about the steelhead season is water temp. yesterday the stewart river was only 33 degrees and that is still pretty cold for fish to run. 38-43 degrees is a good temp. some flies that have worked for me in the past are of coarse the typical yarn fly. you cant go wrong and if you tie your own you will never be short of flies. ive also caught some on bright colored wooly buggers.
Egg patterns are a must in the early season followed by small nymphs and stonefly patterns later when the water temps climb. Learn basic nymphing techniques.
