Lake Trout on the Fly  (United States)

Does anyone have any experience fishing lake trout in the spring with streamers? What time are they usually in the shallows on the big lake? What size/type streamers work best? Do you need sink tip or uniform sink lines to reach them or are they close to the surface? Can you fish them from the shore or do you need a boat to get out further? Any tips would be helpful. Thanks.

Re: Lake Trout on the Fly  (N/A)

There's not a whole lot of activity for lakers during the spring and this is not to say they are not hanging around the shore it's just that everyone is focusing on steelhead and loopers during that time. I am sure that if you get out there you will hook some. Around rocky drop offs are best with big white streamers. All along the shore from Chester Creek up to the Stewart are best. Yes getting down is key, use a deep sink tip such as a Teeny TS-475 or Chuck and Duck. RIO's Densenty Comp's work good also. All heavy grams such as 450 and more. Don't be surprised if you get into a looper or steelhead or two. No shore fishing, you will need a boat or a pontoon boat. Cheers. John
